Job Opportunity : CAP Debt Centre Manager
At SMB, one of our greatest joys is ringing the bell to celebrate when someone becomes debt free through our CAP (Christians Against Poverty) Debt Centre. CAP is a national Christian charity that partners with local churches to help people escape problem debt and find hope for the future. It’s one of our three Mercy Ministries — alongside Make Lunch and Stop the Traffik — and it plays a vital role in transforming lives here in Canterbury.
A Change Ahead
In case you don’t know how it works, CAP is based in Bradford and operates by establishing a local debt centre in a church to serve the local area where it offers debt relief. This debt centre is run by and can’t run without, a Debt Centre Manager, who also serves in the role of Debt Coach, taking on clients to help them become free from debt. This work can also be supplemented by other Debt Coaches who work alongside the Debt Centre Manager.
Our church has been involved with CAP for many years — initially by supporting Lynn Shaw, who served faithfully as a Debt Coach alongside Canterbury Vineyard’s debt centre. In 2021, we took the significant step of becoming the Canterbury Debt Centre ourselves, with Tony Washington leading the work as Debt Centre Manager.
After several years of dedicated service, Tony will be stepping down at Easter. We are so grateful for his compassion, perseverance, and care in helping clients find freedom from debt — thank you, Tony!
The Role
To continue this ministry, we now need to appoint a new Debt Centre Manager.
- The role can be paid (2 days per week) or voluntary, depending on the candidate.
- Our preference is to find someone from within the SMB church family, but if that’s not possible, we will widen the search to other local churches.
- If another church takes on the centre, we would still seek to support the work by funding a Debt Coach, as we’ve done before.
Could This Be You?
We invite you to pray about whether God might be calling you to step into this important ministry — or perhaps to encourage someone you know who might be the right fit.
